Design

The Jura z10 is a stunning espresso machine that oozes luxury and is sure to be the focal point of any kitchen. It is available in two sleek colors: Diamond Black or Aluminum White. Jura has included some nice design features from the LED backlit water tank and cup holder to the eye-catching geometric pattern on the water reservoir. The machine has a dual spout that is height and width adjustable to fit any cup size.

It is worth noting that the Jura z10 is a large and heavy machine. It takes up a lot of space on the counter and is difficult to move. The bean hopper is located on top so there needs to be some overhead space to access this and fill it. While having a large footprint, the espresso machine does also have a big capacity. It has a huge 2.4L water tank which won’t need constant refilling and a large 280g bean hopper with a tight rubber seal to keep the beans fresh. The drip tray and used puck container are also large and well-built.

Performance

The Jura z10 can be controlled by either the responsive touchscreen on the front of the espresso machine, the rotary switch, or the J.O.E smartphone app. From here you can select from 32 specialty drinks and customize each drink according to your taste. Personalized drinks can be saved on the machine or app for repeatability.

While the Jura z10 offers a huge amount of programmability it can be a little overwhelming. Users have the option of adjusting:

  • Grind size
  • Coffee strength: 10 levels
  • Brewing temperature: 3 levels
  • Hot water temperature 3 levels
  • Milk temperature: 10 levels
  • Amount of milk foam

Once your favorite drinks are set up, the machine is easy to use. Brewing is as simple as selecting your drink and watching as a delicious cup of coffee is made in front of your eyes.

Cup Quality

The Jura z10 produces delicious espresso shots with good texture and body, topped with silky crema. In fact, the cup quality is one of the highlights of this espresso machine.

Features

The Jura z10 has a large number of features that can be hard to understand with Jura’s fancy names and abbreviations. We have summarized the key features below.

Product Recognizing Grinder (PRG)

The stainless steel conical burr grinder on the Jura z10 is one of its standout features. This product recognizing grinder is adjusted electronically and automatically by the machine according to the drink it is making. For example, for an espresso, the machine will use finely ground coffee, while for a cold brew, it will use more coarsely ground coffee. This grind size can either be selected by the user or the machine will do it automatically. The grinder itself is very quiet when in use.

There is a bypass doser on the machine for ground coffee. This is a helpful feature if you want to make decaf coffee. It is worth noting that it shouldn’t be used with pre-ground cold brew coffee as this is ground far more coarsely than the machine would grind it.

Cold Brew Extraction Process

The z10 features Jura’s latest cold extraction process, enabling it to prepare 8 different cold coffees. While the marketing declares it is able to make cold brew coffee this is a bit misleading as cold brew is usually made by steeping coarsely ground coffee in cold water for 12-24 hours. Instead, the Jura z10 grinds the coffee coarser and pulses cold water slowly through the grounds, resulting in their cold brew specialty coffee. It is worth noting that the cold brew produced is not all that cold so is best served with ice or over whiskey rocks. If an iced latte is your thing you can turn the milk temperature down and add cool, frothed milk to the coffee. The cold extraction process allows the use of the machine all year round, producing a refreshing beverage in summer or a hot coffee in winter.

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P)

The Jura z10 uses what they have coined the ‘pulse extraction process’ (P.E.P) to extract shots. Basically, rather than extracting coffee at a consistent pressure, the P.E.P. forces water through the grounds in short pulses. This extracts a stronger, more intense shot of espresso while shortening the overall brew time.

3D Brewing Technology

The 3D brewing technology allows the water to flow evenly through the ground coffee for evenly extracted espresso.

Intelligent water system (I.W.S)

The Jura z10 has a Clearyl smart water filter installed which ensures the best quality water is used to make your coffee. The filter also prevents the build-up of limescale which can damage the machine. The machine notifies you when the filter is due to be changed or the espresso machine is due for descaling.

Single Thermoblock System

The Jura z10 has a single thermoblock system which ensures a stable temperature is maintained for both brewing and steaming. Because there is only one thermoblock, brewing and frothing cannot be done simultaneously.

J.O.E app

The Jura z10 has WIFI connectivity enabling it to pair with the J.O.E app. From here you can customize drinks and even brew coffee from the comfort of your bed.

Milk System

The Jura z10 utilizes its Fine Foam Technology to produce milk that has a good texture, with no air bubbles. The milk system is a point of contention among users as the machine doesn’t come with a milk container, this needs to be purchased separately. Given the high price of the machine, you would expect it to include this accessory. However, a container isn’t necessary, the milk tube can be inserted directly into a bottle of milk. If you did want to invest in a more permanent solution, Jura has two options; an affordable glass milk container or the premium Cool Control, pictured below.

The milk temperature can be adjusted with 10 settings up to 150F (66c) and the level of foam adjusted according to tastes. Overall, the milk foam is impressive for an automatic frother and ideal for latte or cappuccino lovers.

Cleaning/ Maintenance

If you are splurging on an expensive espresso machine you want to know it will stand the test of time. And part of that is ensuring that the machine is regularly cleaned and maintained. The Jura z10 has self-cleaning protocols in place to ensure the machine keeps performing at its best. The brew group is fixed in place which means it can’t be removed for deep cleaning or maintenance, however, the cleaning cycles help in maintaining this.

Thanks to the large capacity, the regular cleaning jobs of emptying the drip tray, used puck container, and refilling the water tank doesn’t need to be done too frequently.

The Claris water filter helps prevent scale build-up and means that the Jura z10 doesn’t need to be descaled too regularly. The machine has descaling programs built-in and an alert to notify you when this is due. Descaling itself is fairly straightforward and takes around 20 minutes.

Alternatives

If you aren’t convinced about the Jura z10 there are a few other alternatives. The first thing you could consider would be to opt for a refurbished Jura machine instead. While you won’t find a new machine like the Jura z10 you can find other older models. These refurbished machines have been repaired and serviced and usually, come with a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. This is a great way to get a bargain while still investing in a quality espresso machine. 1st in Coffee has a range of refurbished Jura machines so is a great place to start.

Jura s8

If you don’t want the option of cold coffee beverages, you could opt for the Jura s8. This espresso machine shares many of the same features as the Jura z10, with the exception of the cold brew extraction technology. It offers 15 specialty drinks and produces quality espresso and perfectly textured milk.

Breville Oracle Touch

Breville oracle touch

The Breville Oracle Touch is one of our favorite super-automatic espresso machines. This machine excels at producing cafe-quality drinks with the touch of a button. As the name would suggest, the Oracle Touch has a touch screen from where you can select your drink and alter the grind size, shot temperature, and duration or milk temperature and texture. The machine has a built-in stainless steel conical burr grinder with 45 grind settings. It is also a dual boiler espresso machine, able to steam milk at the same time as pulling a shot.

And the automatic steam wand is one of its standout features. The Breville Oracle Touch produces micro-foam milk that can rival any cafe. With the customization options and cup quality it is hard to beat the Breville Oracle Touch.

Jura z10- Final Verdict

The Jura z10 is a luxury bean-to-cup machine, packed with the latest technology to offer both hot and cold beverages. The sheer range of the coffee menu is impressive, and the quality of espresso and milk is exceptional. The only sticking point is the hefty price tag. If you want a high-end automatic coffee machine for the ultimate at-home coffee experience then the Jura z10 is for you.
